Past Winners Cont..Year 1 -4 Winner Mayfair School, Hastings: the senior syndicate Years 4 – 6, were all involved in a unit requiring them to come up with a plan for hat storage. Peter Free of MWH (NZ) Ltd, Simon Reveley of Heinz Wattie Australasia, William Gray of Opus International Consultants and Peter Volker, Consulting Engineer, each worked with a different class, each of which came up with an individual solution. View Case Study (Hat Storage) Year 5 – 8 Winner Tamatea Intermediate, Hastings: a group of ten Year 8 students identified a need for a workstation for physically disabled/less mobile students to be able to participate in the new biotechnology area. With teacher Peter Hunt and Ben Luders from Holmes Consulting Group, the team was able to come up with a very successful solution to this problem. View Case Study (PDF) Year 9 – 13 Winner Tararua College, Pahiatua: a chocolate chip biscuit took out the prize in this category with the Big Bikkie Project. Diana Eagle’s Year 10 students worked with Food Technologist Carol Pound through the process of making a plan, developing skills and producing their biscuit for sale at the school’s spring picnic. View Case Study (Big Bikkie) Year 1 – 4 Winner Verran Primary School, Birkenhead, Auckland: The Taniwha Garden Seat Project won the Year 4 class, working with teacher Maureen Robertson and engineer Anthony Merino, this year’s prize. Teacher's Report (DOC) Year 5 – 8 Winner Hastings Intermediate, Hastings: A group composed of accelerant pupils and those with a special interest or skills in technology was formed to work on a unit. The ten pupils, with teacher Heather Bell and engineer Simon Reveley of Heinz Wattie Australasia, had to find a solution to the problem of storing food from the school’s garden. Their Pataka Project looked at various ways of storing food and worked on a pataka as their solution. Project Report (PDF) Year 9 – 13 Merit Onehunga High School, Onehunga, Auckland: Five Year 10 students worked on their Onehunga Bay project with teacher David Eastwood and engineer Melior Merioles. 2001 saw the inaugural Transpower Neighbourhood Engineers Awards. Year 1 – 4 Winner Paparangi School, Paparangi, Wellington: Duncan Lint’s class of Year 2/3 pupils triumphed in this category, with their Solid Waste Recycling project, working with engineer Sandra King. Merit Swanson Primary School, Swanson, Auckland: the Sunshade Project, done with the help of engineer Mono Bindra, led to a merit prize for the group of Year 7 pupils and teacher Leisha Cooper. Year 5 – 8 Winner Carncot School, Palmerston North: won this category with their bike stands. The Year 6 class worked with teacher Diane Lewis and engineer Catherine Stapp. View Case Study (Pedal Power Rack) Merit South New Brighton, Christchurch: an extension group of Year 7/8 pupils investigated local pollution with their Avon-Heathcote Estuary Project. Teacher Andy Kemp and engineer Mathew Shepherd worked with the group. West End Primary School: Jude Hudson and engineer Graeme Lindup of Transfield Worley Limited worked with twelve Year 5/6 pupils on the Sun-dials Project. Swanson Primary School: another merit prize was awarded to the school, this time for four Year 5 pupils who had worked with teacher Phil Spriggs on a Confidence and Challenge Course Project. Mono Bindra was the Neighbourhood Engineer for this group as well. Year 9 – 13 Winner Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt: Sue Shone’s Year 12 pupils designed a range of kid-friendly poolside seating and, together with engineer Jonnette Gordon, won with their Huia Pool Children’s Furniture Project.
